The idea

Built for what the system actually needed, not to use up the parts bin.

Most offset bridge "improvements" borrow a part, or a whole assembly, from somewhere else and hope it works by association. We didn't. We mapped the real system first — every force, every adjustment, every possible failure mode — and built the mechanism that system actually called for. Nothing borrowed in from a different context, and nothing sacrificed to get there: complete adjustability and total locking, together, not traded off against each other.

The mechanism

The thing nobody else can copy.

On the Tuffset, the screws on top are for intonation. The screws on the side are for height. That's backwards from most bridges — and it's the whole reason this works.

The screws on top simply unlock and lock the saddle in place along its range — we call them Locking Screws, not intonation screws. Each one tightens into a threaded retainer on the underside of the bridge, rigidly locking the saddle in place. That Locking Retainer has its own sliding track underneath, so you can unlock, adjust, and lock the saddle entirely from the top.

Only the four middle saddles (A, D, G, B) have height adjustment built into the saddle. The E and e strings get their height from the posts instead. That split gives you full setup flexibility, rules out accidentally adjusting with redundant excess height, and maximises the surface-area contact within each saddle's lock.

The Wedges

The four height-adjustable saddles ride on wedges. Tighten the height screw, and it pulls the saddle up the wedge — maintaining true surface-area contact the whole way. Once the saddle's where you want it, tighten the locking screw: that rigidly clamps the wedge and the bridge chassis between the saddle and the Locking Retainer. You can unlock it again, slide it for intonation, and lock it in the new spot without losing your height setting.

What this means, in practice

By this method, your Tuffset bridge:

  • Never requires you to remove the strings to adjust or lock the system
  • Lets every saddle adjust independently for action and intonation, then lock down completely
  • Behaves like a single piece of milled steel, cut to the exact dimensions your guitar demands

Which means you can:

  • Land a setup tailored to the exact guitar on your bench
  • Trust that setup never to drift or sink out of position
  • Dig in harder and put more energy into every note, without rattle or complaint
  • Use the bar with confidence — even heavy use won't distort the bridge or cost you tuning

Profile & height

Both Tuffset bridges pack the saddle mechanism efficiently enough to sit at a lower minimum profile than any vintage-style bridge. So if your current bridge is decked (the underside rubbing the pickguard) a Tuffset will solve that straight out of the box without you having to think about it. Many aftermarket bridges have a higher minimum profile than vintage, which could force a neck shim just to get a playable action. We wouldn't accept that trade-off, so we designed it out.

The Tuffset also reaches a much higher maximum height than most bridges — without giving up rigidity to get there. On bridges with non-locking posts, the female thread is usually much shorter than the post's male thread: cheaper to machine, same adjustment range on paper, but a smaller true contact patch between inner and outer post. It's free to wobble, and gets worse the higher you go. Every Tuffset locking post uses a female thread that runs the full length of the post, so the two lock in alignment across their entire shared thread, not just part of it.

Everything above is identical on both bridges — the saddle, the wedge, the Locking Retainer, all of it. What changes is what the rest of the bridge is doing while that lock holds.

Rocking · High-friction
The Original

On the Original, the lock holds the bridge's attitude — everything else is downstream of the vibrato.

Move the bar, and you're moving the string first. The bridge follows it — that's the trick, not a flaw. Because the saddle grips the string tightly, the same contact patch is held between them the entire time; the string and saddle move together as one surface instead of sliding against each other. Nothing abrades, nothing wears, because nothing is dragging. The lock's job is small and exact: fix that grip in place, so the rocking fulcrum — which barely resists anything — is the only thing left to overcome. It's a nearly frictionless system by design. The vintage rocking bridge had the right idea; it just needed something better than a spring to hold it there.

Fixed · Low-friction
The Fixie

On the Fixie, the lock holds the saddle still.

The chassis doesn't move at all — it's locked straight to the body by the CoreClamp system. So the job flips: the saddle has to stay exactly where you put it while the string slides freely across it, instead of gripping it. Ultra-low-friction PVD coating lets the string pass over the saddle rather than drag it. The lock here has a harder job than on the Original — it's holding against real string-to-saddle friction, not just a rocking fulcrum — which is why a fixed-post bridge is a genuinely harder thing to get right.

The Tuffset Lens

Rocking and Fixed aren't two types of the same thing. They're opposites.

A rocking bridge and a fixed bridge move load through the system in opposite directions — what holds one still would fight the other. Most Offset bridge designs don't seem to notice the distinction, borrowing and transplanting parts or whole assemblies without asking which direction the force is actually flowing. We built each Tuffset the right way up for what it actually has to do. That's why there are two of them, each with their own distinct saddle, post and chassis parts — not one bridge pretending it can do both jobs.

You can usually tell what a designer was thinking by looking at what they built. A lot of offset bridge history reads like a chain of local fixes — solve the problem right in front of you, then reach for an explanation that only covers what you just changed.
